Weekly Reflection: PSII Visit
On Friday, February 7th we (half of our cohort) visited the Pacific School for Inquiry and Innovation. I was very happy and excited about how our visit went and really enjoyed the learning experience. To begin with, I was not very familiar with independent school’s, therefore it was interesting to learn more about how independent school’s function. However, it was very interesting to see how the PSII operated in relation to being more a technology based and focused independent school. I believe that the school is an excellent alternative form of education that helps promote inclusion in an innovative way. It was particularly interesting to see how the school operates on a daily basis in comparison to a more traditional public school.
It was interesting to hear how the PHE component of the school operates with the help of a personal trainer that helps create an individualized training/PE plan for each student. I would be interested to find out more so how the social studies department functions in the school and to see which type of elective courses are offered under this department. I as well would like to find about more about how they promote inclusive education in the realm of PHE. Ultimately, I believe that the school is an excellent alternative means for students to complete their learning. Although, it may not be an accessible fit for all students, it provides the best fit for some students and that is a massive win itself by being an option available in the community. I don’t think I would pursue work in a school such as this, however, I would certainly recommend it to future students.
I have provided a few resources that I studied after the visit to help answer some of my questions, even partly to help me better understand how independent schools operate. And as well, these are resources I can share to help educate future students and families on independent schools if they happen to ask:
PHE in Independent Schools in B.C.
As well, I have attached a video to share to others who might be interested in seeing the school but cannot attend such as we did here
Lastly, here is a photo of the PSII inquiry process
